Clearing the line properly
Cabling or jetting is chosen to suit the pipe and the blockage. Cast iron, clay and plastic do not all tolerate the same tools, so the plumber checks what the line is made of first.
Slow sinks, a tub that fills while you shower, a basement floor drain that backs up. Westminster Emergency Plumber clears the blockage and then works out why the line keeps filling in the first place.
Older parts of Westminster, Arvada and Northglenn were built when cast-iron waste stacks and clay sewer tile were standard, and both collect scale and roots over decades. Cottonwood, silver maple and elm roots along the older streets are very good at finding a joint in a clay line. Newer homes north of the city have plastic waste lines that clog for simpler reasons: wipes, grease and hair.

Cabling or jetting is chosen to suit the pipe and the blockage. Cast iron, clay and plastic do not all tolerate the same tools, so the plumber checks what the line is made of first.
On a repeat blockage, a camera run tells you whether it is grease, scale, roots or a broken section. Guessing at a recurring clog usually means paying to clear it again.
A blocked trap under one sink and a main line full of roots need completely different work. You should leave the visit knowing which of the two you are dealing with.
A single slow fixture is normally a local blockage and often ends there. When several fixtures go at once, or the lowest drain in the house starts backing up, the plumber stops clearing and looks further out, because the trouble is past the fixtures. That is when a camera check of the main sewer line earns its place. If the kitchen sink is the only fixture holding water and the unit beneath it hums or jams, start instead with garbage disposal repair.
Store-bought drain chemicals are worth skipping. They rarely clear a real blockage, they sit in the trap where a plumber has to work, and they can damage older pipe. If a drain is completely stopped, stop running water into it and call.
Read how to tell a clogged drain from a sewer line problem, look at toilet and faucet repair for fixture-side faults, or check where we work and how to request a visit.
It comes down to where the blockage is, how the line has to be reached and what is causing it. A kitchen branch cleared through a cleanout is a different job from a main line that needs jetting and a camera run. Westminster Emergency Plumber gives the price after looking at the access and the symptoms, before the work starts.
It depends on the cause. Grease and hair usually clear for a long time. Roots in a clay joint or a bellied section of pipe will come back, which is why a camera check is worth it on a repeat blockage. Westminster Emergency Plumber tells you honestly which of the two you appear to have, and what a lasting repair would involve.
It is better not to. Those products often fail to move a solid blockage, they leave caustic liquid sitting in the trap where someone has to open it, and they can attack older cast iron. If a drain is not moving, stop using it and stop adding water, and let the plumber work on it dry.
It is the lowest opening in the system, so whenever the main line cannot carry the flow, that is where water comes up. It is a strong sign the problem is out in the main line rather than at a fixture. Mention it when you call, and read more on sewer line repair.
