Before anything else, treat it as an electrical appliance sitting under a sink full of water. Switch it off at the wall, and switch off the breaker as well if you plan to look inside the chamber. Never put a hand, a spoon or a screwdriver into a disposal that still has power to it, even one that will not run. Most disposal trouble comes back to what went into it. Cooking grease and oil, coffee grounds, fibrous scraps like celery strings, corn husks and onion skins, starchy pasta and rice, bones and fruit pits all cause problems, either in the chamber or further down the line where they collect. Run cold water while it works and for a few seconds afterwards. Skip the store-bought drain chemicals entirely; they rarely shift a real blockage and they sit in the trap where someone has to work.
If the sink still drains slowly once the disposal turns freely, the blockage is downstream and drain cleaning is the next step. What affects the cost of garbage disposal repair?
Whether it is the unit or the drain line behind it. Freeing a jam and resetting a tripped unit is small work; replacing a leaking flange means dropping the disposal and resetting it into the sink, and a blocked discharge line is a drain job on top. My disposal just hums. Can that be fixed?
Usually, yes. A hum means the motor has power but the plate cannot turn, which is nearly always something wedged against it. With the power off the plate can be worked free from underneath and the object taken out, then the reset button brings it back. If it still will not turn once it is clear, the motor has seized and the unit is replaced rather than repaired.
Is it safe to reach into a garbage disposal?
No. Do not put a hand or a utensil into the chamber, even with the switch off, and never while the breaker is on. Use tongs from above only after the power is off at the breaker, or leave it for the visit. Should I repair or replace an old disposal?
It depends on where it fails. Seals, switches and jams are worth fixing on any unit.
